I have the ability to overlay my radar onto my chartplotter but don't do it
either. It seems too confusing to me. I like having them side by side.
That said, I've found that I really like having integration between the
units and MARPA capabilities.
Integration between the units means that I can point to something on the
radar and have that point show up on the chartplotter. In reverse, the
upcoming waypoint and course line to that waypoint (while following a route)
show up on the radar.
MARPA (mini automatic radar plotting aid) allows you to point to a target on
the radar and lock onto it. You then get a continuous report of that
target's speed, direction, distance calculated of the closest point of
approach, and the time to that closest point of approach. The course is
also optionally drawn as a projection line that I set for 6 minutes. The
targets identified and their projection lines are also drawn on the
chartplotter.
>From the MARPA data, you can usually tell if the item is a buoy or if it is
moving. When transiting offshore at night, it is great fun to watch and
plan your interaction with ships and other vessels out there. It helps to
keep you awake while the hours seem to fly by...
