I want to thank you Alex and the others that provided information that
enabled me to better understand and make a decision on coolant filters. It
    was most helpful and educational.

    Regards,

The Baldwin # for the JD 6404 is BW5136.

If your engine isn't fitted with a coolant filter then you could buy a
Baldwin CFB5000 (CFB stands for "Coolant Filter Base") to facilitate
the installation. That filter base accepts most of Baldwin's coolant
filters and will almost certainly also fit coolant filters from other
manufacturers. Baldwin's recommendations for element selection are
based on system capacity vs. the amount of coolant additive that is
built in to the filter. Reading between the lines I surmise that the
following elements have the same filtering capacity but vary in the
amount of additive and overall length (thread size, O.D. and gasket
size are identical); Shown below is - Part #, length, amount of BTE
(additive brand name), recommended system capacity, and a somewhat out
of date price range (Jobber price & List price).

    B5134 - 5 3/8 - 0 BTE - No Rec. - US $6.95 to 17.38
    BW5136 - 4 3/8 - 2 units BTE - 1 to 10 gallon - 8.37 to 20.93
    BW5137 - 4 3/8 - 4 units BTE - 11 to 20 gal. - 8.33 to 20.93
    BW5138 - 5 3/8 - 6 units BTE - 21 to 30 gal. - 11.05 to 27.63
    BW5139 - 5 3/8 - 8 units BTE - 31 to 40 gal. - 12.89 to 32.23
    BW5140 - 7 1/8 - 16 units BTE - 41 to 50 gal. - 14.63 to 36.58
    CFB5000 filter base 24.51 to 61.28

Presumably you can find a similar choices and pricing for brands like
    Donaldson, Fleetguard, Wix, etc.

My own opinion is that, while filtering out crud is certainly a good
thing, the really important part of what these filters do is to
continually renew the level of coolant additive, therefore insuring
protection against rust, corrosion, and cavitation damage.

     Emptorishly yours,

    Alex
