    >>>>Re Caterpillars, Guess they have been around "a bit" longer than
    Yanmar.<<<<

    In the interests of fairness...

    >>>>Circa 1890. Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best experimented with various
    forms of
steam tractors for use in farming. They did so separately, with separate
    companies.<<<<

    >>>>1904. Holt's first steam track-type tractor.<<<<

    >>>>1906. Holt's first gas track-type tractor.<<<<

1912: Yamaoka Hatsudoki Kosakusho (Engine Manufacturing Company), forerunner
of Yanmar Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. founded by Magokichi Yamaoka in Osaka.

    >>>>1915. Holt "Caterpillar(r)" track-type tractors are used by the Allies
    in World War I.<<<<

1921: The brand name "YANMAR" adopted. By coupling an engine with a rice
huller, Yanmar started selling a Powered Rice Huller. This was to be the
first powered rice huller in Japan.

    >>>>1925. The Holt Manufacturing Company and the C. L. Best Tractor Co.
merge to form Caterpillar Tractor Co.<<<<

1927: After tying up with Mintol lronworks in the Philippines, Yanmar
started exporting its Horizontal Kerosene Engines to that country.

1930: The first Caterpillar diesel engine
(http://historywired.si.edu/detail.cfm?ID=190) was completed on June 28,
1930, and was given the serial number 1-A-14.

1930: Developed vertical 2-Cycle 5 HP Diesel Engine. This was the first
diesel engine made by Yanmar, and the first model was purchased by the
Ministry of Agriculture. (The engine is now on display in the showroom at
    the Yanmar Nagahama Plant).

    >>>>1931. The first Diesel Sixty Tractor rolled off the assembly line in
East Peoria, Illinois, with a new efficient source of power for track-type
    tractors.<<<<

1933: The world's first small horizontal diesel engine, Yanmar Model HB was
    developed and went into production.

    >>>>1940. The Caterpillar product line now included motor graders, blade
graders, elevating graders, terracers and electrical generating sets.<<<<

    >>>>1942. Caterpillar track-type tractors, motor graders, generators sets
and a special engine for the M4 tank are used by the United States in its
    war effort.<<<<

1947: Yanmar's war-damaged plants renovated and the mass production of small
marine diesel engines started. These early Yanmar marine diesels practically
laid the foundation for the motorization of small Japanese fishing boats.

1952: Company name changed to Yanmar Diesel Engine Company Limited

So it seems that Yanmar is an older company than Caterpillar, and both firms
produced their first diesel engines in 1930. I haven't been able to find
anything about Magokichi Yamaoka's earlier kerosene engines, so I don't know
    if they used compression-ignition.

Of course, Messrs. Holt (1849-1920) and Best (1838-1923) were active in the
steam and tractor field before Yamaoka (18881962) was even born. The USA's
history of industrialisation is longer than that of Japan.

    Best regards, Robert Bryett,
    Sydney, Australia.
