The above issue stirred a distant memory. One of our former vessels was
a Pearson Triton (a very nice sailing vessel), powered by a Universal
Atomic Four (gasoline) engine. The original engine finally failed, and
we elected to repower with a new Universal Atomic Four, since the
repower would be basically an engine exchange, with no modifications
required. The original jacketed copper exhaust system was still in the
vessel and showed no signs of any problems of any type (But it was old).
However, the dealer that was installing the engine would not warranty
the installation unless the exhaust system was replaced. His position
was that his experience had taught him that one could not reliable tell
the condition of old exhaust systems and that pressure test were not a
guarantee that the system would not soon fail. We elected to have the
exhaust system replaced to protect the warranty.
