I need help with a battery/charging problem. I have an older boat, a 1981
Californian. It gets light to moderate use and is plugged into shore power
24/7.
I have 4 Golf Cart Batteries, one year old, Seavolt 215 deep cycle from West
Marine
I found that 3 of the 4 would not hold a charge and were down to 4 volts
each. The sides of the cases had a very small bulge. They had normal water
levels and were never drawn down below the plates. Water refilling was
normal. They are configured along with 2 8D starting batteries
Each side of the boat has an 8D and two 6 volts in series. Each of the
Delco 40 Amp alternators are attached directly to the Golf cart House
batteries with Battery Combiners feeding over to the starting batteries.
There is a 2 year old Xantrex 40 amp Statpower charger, 3 stage, with leads
for three charging banks, one to each of the Golf Cart Batteries and the
third to one of the starting batteries. When I start the engines the amp
meters go to say 20 amps for a few minutes and then slowly go down to
maintenance amps say one or two amps each. The three battery switches allow
combining of the two house banks and the starting banks. I usually run with
the starting batteries combined and the house batteries combined.
I brought them back to West Marine and they verified that they were bad and
gave 4 brand new ones. Thank you WM.
Anyway - I want to be sure that the new batteries are not destroyed also.
The 8Ds are still good, one of the two is fed directly from the battery
charger but they are usually combined through the battery switches,
I know this is complicated but maybe someone has an idea that I missed.
