Might also check with the manufacture about the allowable Side Load on the
engine. Too much (and a large alternator might easily put 'too much' on a
smallish generator engine) will cause damage to the crank bearings..
If this is the case, all is not lost. A 'pto' style takeoff can drive an
idler shaft which then takes the side load of the alternator. Or, put 2
same-sized alternators on. One on each side exactly opposite of each other.
That way the belt loads will cancel each other out.
Or (not sure if this is the case), but a different type of belt (e.g., using
a flat belt as opposed to a couple of V belts) might need lower tension, and
hence place a lower side load.

I hope so, since that's exactly what I'm in the process of doing with Coho.
All our ac is produced by a 3kw inverter - including the refrigeration. We
have seperate alternators on the Cummins NHN, one for the house & one for
starting bank.
I bought a used Westerbeke 4kw genset, and after repairing it I'm mounting
a 200A 24v alternator (from ebay) to run off the crankshaft auxiliary
pulley. There's some fiddley welding and grinding involved in the mounting
for the big alternator, but the idea is pretty simple. Maybe Arild will
chime in - he's been arguing for this kind of setup for some time. We have
8 GC's in 24v configuration. the a-c side of the genset just goes along for
the ride, and as a backup.
