Absent the bit of hyperbole about the magnitude of the explosion, the Halifax
Museum presentation about the blast is an interesting visit.

The Black Tom explosion in NY harbor during the same period rivals the Halifax
explosion, although there was nowhere near the same loss of life due to the
    remoteness of the site.

In total, the Black Tom explosion consumed several times the munitions of the
Halifax event, but NY harbor was fortunate in that the event was composed of a
series of progressive blasts as the raging fires consumed boxcars and barges.

Had all of the explosives stockpiled on the pier ignited at the same time, the
blast would have devastated the harbor, lower Manhattan and destroyed the Statue
    of Liberty.

    James
