I have a standard poodle that weighs over 50 pounds. Over the weekend, we
anchored at Ocklocknee Shoal and thought it would be a good time to trial
getting the dog out of the boat and into the water, and then getting him
back onto the boat.
It was not a good trial. It took two strong men to get him out of the
cockpit and down to the swim platform, and the reverse process of getting
him out of the water back up to the deck took three of us, not to mention
that it traumatized the dog.
He is too large to lift and pump over your shoulder, and the transom
steps and narrow swim platform prevent him from giving any assistance at
the opening in the stern rail. Nothing like scared dead weight!
I'd like to design a system for launching and retrieving my dog that can
be operated by one person and hope someone who has solved a similar
problem will have an appropriate answer, short of recommending that I cut
a transom door in my Marine Trader 44 that is 6 feet off the water.
