T&T: Can I put a high output alternator on my AC generator?

My boat came with an 8KW Westerbeke generator and electric cooking. I just
replaced the stove with a propane model and now have little use for the
generator (I am in the Pacific NW). I have a very large L-16 house bank
(800 Amps at 24 volts). Although the batteries will last a couple of days
with judicious conservation, it would be good to charge them up
occasionally while at anchor. If I run the generator to charge the
batteries through the inverter, it will put about 50 amps an hour into the
batteries at the bulk stage, which means that I have to run the generator
more than six hours to replace 300 amps. I would like to get a faster
charge and less generator run time.

I don't want to rip out the perfectly functioning AC generator to put in
the DC generator that I would have installed, but it occurred to me that it
might be possible and much less expensive to hang a 100 amp (or so) 24 volt
alternator on the generator engine and use that to charge the house
bank. I have never heard of anyone doing this. Is it a reasonable idea?

I can see problems fitting two alternators in the sound shield (I will
still need to charge the 12 volt generator batteries), but other than that,
is this an idea that is worth pursuing?

    Best,

    Steve
