>For our non-NW boaters -- there
once was Ripple Rock, just under the surface at low tide in the narrows
that
claimed many, many vessels and lives over the years. I say "once"
because
they tunneled under the narrows and up into the rock, packed it with
explosives and blew it up in the late 50's.
There still is a Ripple Rock, and it still causes problems but not as
many or to such a degree as it used to. The BC government imported a
bunch of Welsh miners who knew how to do such things, and they tunneled
out from Maude Island and then up into the twin tops of the rock which
they packed with explosives. The resulting explosion was, as was
pointed out, the largest non-nuclear, man-made explosion ever. However,
they did not blow away all of Ripple Rock, but knocked off enough of the
twin peaks so that the top is now 47 feet below the surface at low tide
as opposed to just under the surface. The rock still has a considerable
effect on the current patterns through the area. For a good article on
the "shaving" of Ripple Rock, take a look at
http://www.vancouverislandabound.com/tamingof.htm .
