I have a story about firearms and boats in Western Canada that may go
back about 20 years.. My father used to keep a 22 rifle ready to kill
large halibut before bringing them on board. If you have ever caught
a big halibut you will understand why. He was arrested by an young,
eager-beaver Mountie, who had boarded the boat. He was told that he
could pay a fine immediately or appear in court. My father was
curious and had the time. So he decided to see what the judge would
say. In court a few weeks later, he was asked if the gun had been
kept loaded on board and my father replied that it was loaded. The
judge then said, A gun isn't much good unless it is loaded is it?
Case dismissed." I imagine things could be different now, and the
gun is no longer on board. It was one of my father's favorite
boating stories, and I enjoy it now every time I tell it.
