I usually enter Discovery Pass at slack and work with the tides going
north for obvious reasons. ( remember the tides flip direction at Cape Lazo
,Comox). I like to simply avoid the turbulent water that will be quite visible
in the distance. To run close to the shore will put you in a back eddy at
some point and you will end up in some turbulence. However running in the
middle is not a good idea either( watch for cruise ships or listen for them,
they usualy travel two or three together fast). Avoiding the boils and
whirlpools would be my best recommendation from my experience. There is lots of
room so relax and pay attention its not that bad. Similar conditions will also
be present at a few locations such as Rock Bay. I have seen large logs sucked
into a whirlpool and reappear later like a missile jumping out of the water.
Junk like logs is more of a threat and north winds can make Seymour nasty . I
do not have my charts handy but Rock Bay at the meet of Seymour , Johnson
Strait , and Nodales ( I think ) . is a favourite spot of mine. The porpoises
hang out there until the Killer whales begin to hunt. The whales force the
fish from all three directions into Rock Bay it is unbelivable to whitness.
