I like to read about boats and boating almost as much as I like to be out on
the water. Having made many mistakes over the years buying, selling,
maintaining and refurbishing boats, I am especially interested in any book that will
help me avoid more mistakes in the future.
Well, I have just read the best book I have ever opened on the subject of
boats: it is "Mid Size Power Boats," published in 2003 by David Pascoe,
available from Mr. Pascoe directly via his web site, yachtsurvey.com. It isn't cheap
($70.00), but anyone who is seriously involved with boating -- especially
anyone seriously considering buying a boat -- will get his or her money's worth
many times over by avoiding any one of the many common mistakes that the book
describes.
In addition to being very knowledgeable -- and very wise -- about boats, Mr.
Pascoe is a heck of a good writer. To put it bluntly, once I started reading
the book I couldn't put it down. The chapters I was especially interested in
(e.g., Power Options) were terrific and the chapters I wasn't especially
interested in (e.g., Basic Hull Construction) . . . were also terrific.
Experienced professionals may disagree with one point or another made by Mr. Pascoe --
he is giving his his opinions, after all -- but I suspect he is right on 95% or
more of what he says.
In my opinion this book is in the league (in terms of practical knowledge and
usefulness) of Voyaging Under Power by Beebe and the Offshore Cruising
Encyclopedia by Steve and Linda Dashew, both of which are really for advanced
boaters rather than beginners. Mr. Pascoe's book can be understood and appreciated
by both beginners and experienced boaters.
You can get an idea of Mr. Pascoe's writing by visiting his web site. That's
how I found the book after seeing references to the web site on TWL. But buy
the book -- you will be glad you did.
For the record, I have no connection, financial or otherwise, with Mr. Pascoe
or this book. I have never met him nor talked with him. In fact, I didn't
know he existed until a couple weeks ago. But I am damned glad I found his
book. I only wish it had been around 20 years ago when I bought my first boat;
if it had been, maybe Newman & Gray wouldn't be completely rebuilding my fourth
boat up in Maine as I write.
