    In addition to cooling and lubrication, the flushing of the shaft log
    reduces crevice corrosion of your driveshaft, a condition that seems to
    be aggravated by stagnant water. FWIW, I had the nipple on the stuffing
    box break off in the same way. And, by the way, if you are not
    convinced to replace the hose yet, consider where all the extra water
    will go - carefully calculating if your exhaust can handle it.
