The purpose of the water to the packing gland is for lubrication and cooling
of the packing gland and forward cutlass bearing, assuring a flow of water.
The cause of the two fittings failing is dezincification. These fittings
were probably brass, which has high zinc content. Bronze would be a better
    choice.

    Good luck,

    Bob Lowe

    >>>On other problems, while putting the heat exchanger back on, fittings on
both ends of a hose that provides water to the propeller shaft, just fell
apart. The one at the stuffing box was a bit problematic as it is below the
waterline and water was gushing in!

I am still trying to learn these systems and do not quite understand this
one. QUESTION: What is the purpose of sending (hot) water into the housing
for the propeller shaft? Or, does the water come in from the propeller
    shaft?

The configuration is thus: Raw water input to heat exchanger, to
transmission cooler to a T to the exhaust manifold. Off the T just
described, a short hose down to the propeller shaft. What is the purpose of
sending water to the propeller shaft? Can one do without this?<<<
