    I suspected something like this but don't understand the details.

    Maybe they've figured out some way to compensate. One
    possibility is that these jaws are small, just over 1 inch
    across. Might not even fit 4/0 cable.

    I will be careful and try to be consistent.

    Correct. I have three different clamp on meters. The smallest has tiny jaws
    that just fit a 3/0 cable.
    I prefer to use that for DC measurements.

    For my AC leakage current tests I even modified several clamp jaws to give
    extra sensitivity at low current levels below 2 amps.
    This is where I really noticed the effect of positioning the cables within the
    jaws.

    All the DC meters I have used require a precise Zero'ing before each
    measurement.
    Stray magnetic fields can create false readings.
    The trick is to clamp the jaws in place, zero the meter then read the current.
    Zeroing he meter before clamping will skew the results.
