It seems easy to understand how a clamp on device can measure AC

Clamp on DC meters use a Hall effect sensor for the DC measurements.
A hall effect device measures magnetic flux intensity instead of being a simple
transformer like the AC clamp on meter is.
A note of caution concerning these devices.
The position of the wire within the clamp jaws is important.
You can produce large discrepancies if you move the jaws around.
Comparing readings from circuit to circuit requires a bit of care.
