We had two 47-50 foot boats burn and sink this morning in our marina
(Point Roberts, WA, just south of Vancouver, BC). The fire was noticed
at about 0530 this morning and marina security did a good job of moving
a couple of neighbouring boats, although one has a lot of smoke damage
on one side. Another schooner in a neighbouring slip suffered a lot of
heat blistering and browning on the fire side. The Point Roberts
volunteer Fire Dept. was assisted by the neighbouring Delta Fire Dept.
to contain the blaze.
The double slip is now contained with booms and logs but there is a lot
of lube oil and diesel on the surface along with all sorts of debris and
propane cylinders. What a mess. I gather one of the boats still has
900 gal of diesel on-board. The spill contractor had just arrived to
try and handle the mess. All that you can see of the boats is some
rails about 4 feet down with fenders floating up. Some boats on other
docks had cinders from the fire on them.
We were chatting with the State Environmental Response guys and they
were saying that most likely the poor owners would be assessed an
environmental fine, although he would try not to let this happen, He
just hated to add insult to injury in a case like this.
Our Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit was out this morning as safety
boat for the annual Polar Bear Swim in Delta. A balmy air temp of 2 C
(36deg F) with snow on the ground. Water temp was about 6C I think. I
was just as happy to be in my floater suit and not swimming. Brrr.
All in all, a very eventful start to the New Year, but certainly not the
way you like to see someone else's New Year start.
