Depending on the microwave power requirements a 1500 watt unit might be
sufficient but we would recommend a 2000 watt inverter/charger. See page 525
of the 2003 West Marine Catalog for an excellent summary entitled "Selecting a
Power Inverter". We have used a Freedom Marine 20 (2000w) Heart (now Xantrex)
Interface Inverter/Charger for 7+ years without a day of trouble (knock
wood!). During this entire period we have also used the same (two) 8D gel cell
batteries. We power our navigation PC, coffee pot, TV, and
microwave/convection oven. The sine wave for this unit is excellent in
contrast to some of the newer, high frequency models. These may have clipped
waves and cause problems with some PC's.
Be sure the inverter is correctly installed with the neutral isolated from
shore power!
Good Luck!
John

Subject: TWL: Need inverter recommendation
I'd like to add an inverter to put a microwave and laptop aboard, but don't
think I need more than 1500-2000 watts. I've heard that the inverter needs to
be specialized in some way (something about sine waves).
What inverter did you buy for your boat and has it worked out well?
Thanks for your guidance.
