Hello and Happy New Year to all fellow TWL members.
Has anyone ever tried copper grease? The Ham Radio community has used it for
years on electrical connections that are exposed to weather, such as ground
cable connections. It promotes electrical conductivity and acts as an anti
seize compound.
" The Teflon tape on Zinc pencil threads has been a controversial topic for
some time. A couple of years ago we ordered some new zincs for our Onan
generator and these zincs arrived from the factory with Teflon tape over the
threads. We were writing a boating newsletter at the time and, in the belief
that an insulating tape over the zinc electrode thread was most
inappropriate, we took a picture of the product along with our comments. We
hit a hornet's nest! Several people told us that we were totally incorrect
stating that Teflon should not be used in this application. They said the
threads cut through the Teflon and good conductivity is maintained. Not
being 100% convinced, we made some resistance measurements with and without
the tape and low and behold, we had to change our mind. The good
conductivity of the metal to metal contact without Teflon was maintained
even after the application of one or two wraps of Teflon. HOWEVER.... we
still use bare threads on our zincs!"
