Jim:
You asked: When going "up-stream" on the Tenn-Tom, what kind of
current is one faced with?
I don't recommend anyone going northbound on the Tenn-Tom before May 1.
Mid-May is even better. Normally, water levels are down and most of the debris is
gone by then. Maximum current will be about 2mph with a bit more immediately
below some of the dams and somewhat less elsewhere.
2003 was an exception when we had near record breaking rainfall during May.
As a result, it was a tough month to be not only on the Tenn-Tom but also the
Tennessee and Cumberland. So sometimes even with the best of planning, you
may find yourself cooling your heels in Mobile while waiting for water
conditions to improve.
