David,
I ran into this dilemma about 10 years ago when installing a Navico
autopilot on Annie Sez Too. Their tech support told me on a displacement or
semi displacement boat with a keel the smaller pump would work fine. It has.
I am still happy with it's performance.
Navico has never been known as one of the "top-shelf" autopilots, and
over the years I have heard a lot of complaints about them. Mostly poor
response in a following sea, a problem I do not share. When I have looked at
the installations, I have invariably seen too small of a wire gauge from the
CPU to the pump with the resultant voltage drop. I think that on a "close"
installation like yours or mine that this becomes more critical. Personally
I would take the smaller pump.
My experience only
