>>>> One of the recent threads on TWL involved anchoring. Well, today I
stumbled on two web pages detailing tests done on a number of popular anchor
types. The interesting point was that one test was done in soft mud, a
bottom that is almost as problematic as grass, and one was done in muddy
sand. As you might suspect, the differing bottoms really skewed the results
for the same anchors. <<<<
Hmmm. I don't think the muddy bottom was the only thing skewing the Creative
Marine "ABS Certified" test. The methodology looked pretty murky too.
1. The competing anchors ranged in weight from 15lb to 52lb. The testers
implied they were comparable because "All of the manufacturers of these
anchors recomend them for boats between 33 and 38 feet in length". That's a
pretty wide length range to begin with, and of course says nothing about
displacement, topside area etc.
2. The "winning" anchor was the 52lb Super Max. The runners-up were not
ranked explicitly, but weighed 35lb and 17lb. Of the 17lb anchor, the report
stated that "The XYZ in order to be competitive with the Super Max anchor in
soft mud bottoms would need to be quite a bit heavier and larger in fluke
area". So a 17lb anchor would need to be larger and heavier to compete with
a 52lb anchor... Well, I can't argue with that.
3. They tested eleven products, but only gave results for ten. Why? When I'm
presented with incomplete data, I always start to wonder if results have
been discarded that did not "fit the curve". Maybe, maybe not.
Readers must decide for themselves if they believe that anchors of such
widely varying sizes can be compared meaningfully, and if the results of
this test are useful.
Disclaimer: I am not an expert on anchors, and do not have to contend with
muddy bottoms in my boating area. I have no experience with the Super Max,
which may for all I know be an excellent product. I have no commercial
interest in Creative Marine or any of the products under test.
Best regards, Robert Bryett,
