Traditional depthsounders provide the distance to the bottom. If you
have a fishfinder, in addition to the depth, you will see a hard line
for a hard bottom, a thick line for a soft bottom and a very jagged line
where weeds are located. Together with chart notes and other clues,
you should be able to determine the type of bottom with reasonable accuracy.
