We gunkholed the Chesapeake for 7 years with a basic $140.00 hand held Garmin
GPS and paper charts on our 26 foot Nonsuch sailboat. We also did the
waterway south, the Florida keys and the Bahamas in the same boat with the same GPS.
It is not difficult to navigate with paper charts and a hand held GPS and I
strongly urge you to first learn do it that way to strengthen your navigating
ability.
I know a boater who navigated from here to Florida and back in the ICW with a
plotter type GPS and did not even know how to find his position on a paper
chart from coordinates using dividers. Any practiced sailor can do it in thirty
seconds or less.
Learn the basic way well first and when you have money to spare try the
newest electronic gadgets but be prepared to navigate safely when they quit.
