For next summer we are considering a cruise along the east side of
Hecate Strait then across the strait to the east side of the Queen
Charlotte Islands. (For the benefit of non-NW boaters these wild
islands lie off the west coast of northern British Columbia). We have a
42 Krogen and have already covered BC as far as Prince Rupert. What
tips do fellow listees have for these areas? I am especially interested
in the best routes across the Hecate Straits. I understand that the
Douglases are working on book for this area. I haven't seen it on the
shelves yet. Does anyone know when the publishing date is?
Recommendations on other books/guides for this area would also be
    appreciated.

While I haven't actually made that trip yet I have researched it
extensively. All those who I have talked to recommend going from the top
of Banks Island to Sandspit/Skidegate. It's just under 60 miles. These
same folks say I will be glad I have flopper stoppers. This is the
shortest possible crossing. If you have enough crew and a weather window
the longer one's may work as well.

The Haida now require a permit for cruising Moresby Island. I have not
inquired as to cost and other factors.

I don't know anybody who was disappointed that they made the trip.

Please post your research results ...

    Have a great time,
