We stayed for about a week as I recall -- we came back only because water
was running low in our sail boat and several days of bad weather were
forecast. We had no trouble anchoring. Nice sand bottom. We anchored out
near the south eastern edge of the anchorage to stay away from
others. There was also a mooring or two that a couple of shrimpers would
use if they were open. Some cruisers used them too. There was a small
dock that you could leave your dinghy at when we were there.
One caution I would make is that on the way to Dry Tortugas you leave the
one bank and cross a deep patch of water maybe 120' deep as I recall --
near the Tortugas. When we came through there it was densely covered with
crab pots. Normally they aren't a problem, but these had perhaps 20-40' of
excess floating line left to float out horizontally across the water. In
calm water this isn't a problem, but when the waves kick up it's difficult
enough to see the crab floats in the spume and white caps, but nearly
impossible to see the floating line. I'm told that many states require a
sinker on the line to keep it from fouling the surface like that, but
apparently not in Florida -- or at least that guy didn't use them. It's
the only place I've ever seen that.
