I got "hit" once in my kitchen at home. Best we can tell, lightning struck
the utility pole outside and ran in through the electrical wiring. I was
standing by my island stovetop (electric) in the kitchen, and it jumped
about 8" and hit me in the stomach. At first, I thought that somehow the
stove had shorted out and shocked me, but it was fine. Then we saw the
little surge protector cube on the wall on fire, with about a 12" diameter
black circle around it. Lots of electronics in the house were damaged, but
most things on surge protectors survived. The laptop suffered no damage
except that the modem had been spiked and ruined. Don't forget to put your
phone lines on surge protectors as well!

Now, I had gotten back from Hawaii a couple of weeks earlier and brought
some lava back, ignoring those silly superstitious warnings. Had a string of
bad luck things happen to me, culminating in that lightning strike (out of a
mostly clear sky, with no rain by the way). I mailed the lava back to the
big island, with no return address. Things got better.

Ever been to Hawaii Kurt? ;-)
