Naturally I agree with Marin. A phrase that applies to this philosophy is
*situational awareness.* If you are running a paper-based DR chart, and are
looking out the pilothouse window, or looking at ground truth radar, then
you have a reality check on your chartplotter.
If your different sources of information agree, you know where you are. If
they do not, your situational awareness should assist you in analizing the
problem. My boat came with a Loran and if I have a question about true speed
over ground, I'll take a peek at the Loran to see what he thinks. Also,
chart plotters when outputing to an autopilot can give you current set,
etc.. There is more info available than before and more opportunities to get
it right.
