Yes, that should be about right if one wants to travel across the entire
Mediterranean. In such a case, it probably pays to have your own
boat delivered from the US. Unless such a trip is combined with taking
delivery of one of the (few) European-made trawlers, such as a Dutch
steel cruiser, a French power catamaran or a Spanish semi-displacement boat. I
believe it has been done before.
On the other hand, chartering would be an alternative if one does not wish to
spend so much time away from home, or simply to get a first impression of the
cruising area. One possibility would be to use local boats. For example, the
traditional ships in Greek and Turkish waters are very attractive and
fascinating trawlers with basic desings dating back thousands of years.
Last time I checked, there were some available for charter (along with Carvers
and other powerboats). And one can visit shipyards where
they still build them in wood! The local fishermen will not go for anything
else.
Concerning cruising information, I suspect there are enough Med cruisers on
this list to get you started. You can also find excellent (and not entirely
rosy..) english-language cruising guides covering the entire area.
So, see you soon over here!
