As I mentioned a couple days ago, we did indeed have the BDF (Bahamas
Defense Force) stop to talk with us. Their boat was unmarked and I didn't
know it was them until one of the locals told me. I could have seen 20 of
them and not known it.
I also saw perhaps 4 or 5 official boats out at Royal Island near Nassau
once so I know they exist. We were anchored at Royal one night when a big
high speed cruiser came in planing over the submerged reef and crashed up
on the coral reef part of the shore -- on autopilot of course. Lots of
boats and a helicopter showed up the next morning. There were so many
police around that I sort of wondered if the boat had been carrying
contraband of some kind but never did find out.
As I understand it, the fee is $300 now? That's way above what it used to
be of course, but still seems relatively low to me. Taken as a percentage
of what my boat costs me over a year's time, $300 to visit the Bahamas is a
pretty small increment. Personally, I wouldn't try to save the fee by just
not legally entering the islands. I suspect they're not bashful about
seizing your boat if they happen to find out.
Good luck....
