Mike M states:
Please note that the bell is no longer required on a vessel 12 meters or
more but less than 20 meters in length.
While the above is true of the federal regs, many states have their own regs
which mirrored the federal regs once upon a time. The state regs may not keep
up with the federal reg changes and if you are stopped by a state marine
enforcement officer, you may not have all the required equipment. If you are from
out of state, you may get off with a warning. However, if you are a state
resident or homeported in the state, you had better have the equipment.
Connecticut is an example. Connecticut law still requires all vessels 26 feet and
over to carry a bell that is at least 7.87 inches (200mm) in diameter. So, we
carry our Connecticut bell!
