A common suggestion is to operate the "Combine" relay via an oil
pressure switch, so that it will not operate until you have oil
pressure - which is usually shortly after the engine starts.
Some of the smart alternators have an output to drive a combine relay,
which will not activate until 15 seconds or so after the engine
starts.
