There is a PC board in each combiner, Arild, with about 30 components - the
job it does is not trivial. The hysterias is not only voltage but it is
assisted by having both turn on and turn off time delays of about 20 to 30
seconds.
The combiners are actually designed to cycle under certain circumstances, at
about 1 cycle per minute. For example if the alternator was only running at
idle speed and there is a heavy load on the house bank so that the
alternator couldn't maintain voltage, then the combiner will disconnect to
protect the starting bank from discharge. As soon as it is disconnected and
the load removed, the alternator will start to raise the voltage again and
the combiner will re-connect, delivering a little available power to the
house bank each time. This would cause about one on/off cycle per minute
which is normal operation and part of the design.
