That sounds like a great idea but the indoor/outdoor thermometers I've
used for other applications have a temperature range that stops
around 160F. Can you suggest a brand or model? The ones I have
sure work great in my fridge.

Duuh! Now I feel dumb! So does mine. :-(((
I have two digital meters than came with thermo probes plus an Infra red gage
plus a high temp thermocouple pyrometer.
I also have a temp gauge which I built ( actually a prototype from a
commercial project ) all of which will go above the boiling point of water;
except that one darn indoor /outdoor temp gauge.
Okay! So assuming you use the outdoor sensor. If your alternator runs cool and
stays below 160, no problem!
If it consistently run red-line at the top of the scale, then its time to
recheck and possibly rethink the setup.
Of course if you are a tool nut like me you would have the IR gun plus thermo
probe plus whatever catches you r eye at the next tool show. < G >
