Mike,
To charge your batteries while cruising and not turn on the generator:
Hook up a high output alternator on your engine/s. Balmar in the Pacific
Northwest makes several models including a dual output unit. This allows
you to charge both engine batteries and house batteries. You can also
add a battery switch to route current to your choice of batteries. A
battery combiner is another useful tool for unattended charging of
battery banks. A 12 volt "expanded scale" electrical meter or a digital
meter is a good way to monitor the amount of charge left in your
batteries and helps in routing charging power.
