The answer to your question is yes and no.
Yes, in simple terms, you can charge your "house bank" using the engine
alternators. People do it all the time. For a quick overview I suggest you
try the West Advisor column in the West Marine Catalog. You don't
necessarily need new equipment, but you will probably want it.
No, nobody can tell you how to do it in "simple terms", because like all
boating projects, the more you get into it the more choices you have to make
and the more you will find that the "experts" have conflicting opinions.
Every boat and every boat owner is different. Don't worry about that.
Anyone who can install an inverter/charger can handle this. For more
detailed info on this try Nigel Calder's "Boatowner's Mechanical and
Electrical Manual". Once you have the basics you will have no problem
knowing what questions to ask and how to evaluate the answers to meet your
specific needs.
