There seem to be several of you who know an awful lot about electrical
systems on boats, so I hope one of you will be so kind as to help an
electrically-challenged dummy like me.
Two years ago I (yes, I did it myself with great help from a gifted friend)
installed a Heart 2500W Inverter/Charger on my boat along with four 6V Golf
Cart Batteries. It all works great. The problem is this. Once I unplug from
shorepower and switch to inverter power and run down the river for 8 hours, by
the time I get to an anchorage I need to turn on the Onan for an hour or so to
recharge the inverter batteries. The alternative of course is to run the
generator all the way down the river and arrive at the anchorage with fully
charged batteries, but that almost defeats the purpose of the inverter.
I believe it is possible to charge the inverter batteries while the engines
are running but I have no idea how to do that. I have twin Cat 3208's and the
battery charger that came with my boat that charge my two 8 D's and a couple
of smaller house batteries while the engines are running. That all works fine
too. The inverter and GC batteries were installed as a completely separate
system from the battery banks that came with the boat.
So, my question is, can someone, in real simple terms, tell me if, and how, I
can charge my inverter batteries while I am running the boat engines without
running the Onan Genset? Do I need different equipment?
Thank you for any assistance you can give me. This is such a great forum for
boaters, and I have learned so much about boats and boating.
