This is from a shrimper-friend about a year ago: "It generally should not

>There are no facilities for them there. There used to be a great dock, but
>it burned down and has not been replaced. The only facility is supposedly
>restricted to commercial trade."
The tidal currents can be horrendous.
I can't comment on the docking facilities. There were town docks there in Nov. 2002 and several pleasure boats were tied up at them as we could see from our anchorage.
We anchored about 1/2 mile to the SW from the town sheltered by an island. There were a total of 2 trawlers and 5 sailboats anchored there for the two days we were there. The holding was good and we had excellent protection for winds from a severe thunderstorm and then stong NW winds for about 18 hours. Where we were anchored there was very little effect from the current.
The reason for our lack of current due to the tidal flow most likely was the location of the anchorage away from the deeper channel which runs close to the town.
We would certainly go around the rim again and use Steinhatchee and Cedar Key again.
