Thanks to everyone who commented on the installation of engine room blowers.
There were slightly more people in favor of extracting air from the engine
room than blowing air into the engine room. The major pros and cons were:
1. Blowing air into the engine room could cause some pressurization of the
engine room if adequate exhaust vents were not in place and might cause
unpleasant fumes and heat to migrate into the living areas of the boat.
2. Extracting air from the engine room could result in starving the engines,
again, if there is not adequate ventilation to provide fresh air into the
engine compartment.
Achieving a balance between the input of fresh air and the extraction of hot
air is critical to proper engine performance and while adequate ventilation
may have been installed on the boat originally, if you've added equipment to the
engine compartment (inverters, batteries, etc.) you may have to improve the
air flow. Arild provided some information about measuring the pressure/vacuum
of the engine room using simple items you probably have around.
