Jeroen,
I'll leave formal course recommendations to others..but here are a few
thoughts.
Depending on your small boat experience and comfort level you might start off
with either a USCG AUxiliary or Power Squadron public course....basic
safety, rules of the road, basic skills like anchoring....Then take a USCG six pac
course given now by a number of schools.....
Generally, I'd say you want the following: safety, navigation, practical
experience and maintenance... Sounds like your background covers the latter
two.....
Perhaps most important, once you've purchased your boat, USE it away from
docks and marinas for a few months before embarking on any long trips....find out
how she handles, decide on spare equipment, determine your level of comfort
in varying conditions, inspect every piece of equipment,etc,etc...and don't set
a rigid travel schedule which may prompt you to take chances against adverse
weather ..Mother Nature doesn't take that lightly....
Good luck,
Cheers,
