Let me give a few first-hand examples of the differences between Mercruiser and Volvo I/Os. My last boat had a Merc Bravo II drive and 5.7 L engine. It was a very nice combination which never gave me any problems . . . but to replace the seawater impeller it was necessary to remove a serpentine belt, then remove the pump assembly (conveniently located at a low point at the front of the motor), then disassemble the pump, replace the impeller, then assemble everything back together. Contrast that process with my friend's Volvos (V-6). The pump/impeller is located right out in front up high. Ibm guessing he can replace the impellers in about 10 minutes.
Example 2 - My friend took his boat to the dealer (under warranty) because it sounded like he had some bearing noise in one of the drives. It did turn out to be a bearing problem. He expected that they would just rebuild the drive but the dealer was told by Volvo to pull the entire drive and ship it to them because they wanted to see just what was causing a problem like that in one of their drives. He ended up with a new drive. Contrast that with the way Merc was handling the corrosion problem on their Bravo III drives last year. If youbre interested, read all about it on the BOATUS bulletin boards.
* I understand that Volvo also invented the I/O.
I know for sure that if I ever own another boat with an I/O it will have Volvo drives.
