    Dave Gerr, in "The Nature of Boats", espouses just this theory. A problem is
    that marinas and boat yards charge for the boat's length rather than the
    volume. Hence costs for dockage and storage would be 50% higher than a shorter
    fatter boat of equivalent displacement.
