    I think the use of any form of fiberboard on a boat is a really
    bad idea. I've seen many older boats where some PO has used a
    fiber product to do some woodwork project, and it's usually
    coming apart some years later. Some builder in Taiwan was using
    MDF for soffitts on a trawler, and they sag and crumble after a
    number of years.

    MDO plywood (medium density overlay), commonly used for outdoor
    signage, would be a good choice. It has smooth paper on each
    side, bonded with a waterproof resin, and is about ready for
    paint when you get home from the lumber yard. I paid $48 a sheet
    about 6 years ago, so it's not cheap. But the labor saving in
    finishing makes up for the price.
