In another life I ran a big dealership repair shop. One year there were 4
shops in the Washington DC area that had major fires all caused by a
conventional drop light with an 60 watt incandescent bulb falling to the
ground while gasoline tanks were being emptied. We trashed all our
conventional drop lights and replaced them with fluorescent drop lights.
They don't get near as hot and are a whole lot safer. Another reason to
switch is when you have yourself in the perfect position in the engine room
and the light decides to leave its old position and land in your face. They
can burn you or anything else.
If you are still using a old style drop light, replacing it with a short
tube fluorescent light will add a measure of safety to your boat.
