    Frank,

Backpackers have a wide assortment of hand pump filters for treating
suspect water. They'll filter out pathogens but not chemical
contamination. You wouldn't want to do a hundred gallons a day, but for
your daily consumption water for a short time they'd be fine. Check
    them out at REI.com.

You can also chemically sterilize the water in your tanks. Bleach will
work. There are other products made specifically for the task. This
has been discussed extensively on the list in the past so do a search
and you'll soon be an expert on the topic.

I've often heard that water in 3rd world countries is often not safe to
drink. If you DON'T have a watermaker aboard, how do you handle this
    problem? --FrankB
