There are several navigation programs for the Mac, although at the moment
most will run only on OS 9.x. These include the older, and some say the better,
versions of MacSea, NaviMaq, and GPSy. All will run the major raster chart CDs.
GPSy lets you scan in your own charts as well. To the best of my knowledge,
none will let you use NOAA's free download ENC charts.
GPSy is planning a revision of the program to let it run on OS X in the
native mode. It will also include the capability of reading ENC charts. OS X is
virtually bulletproof and considerably more stable than any MS operating system
currently available.
But you can use your PC only programs on the Mac by running Virtual PC. This
program flawlessly emulates a PC on Mac hardware with minimal speed loss.
Virtual PC was bought about 6 months ago by Microsoft and is currently being
included in the release of MS Office 2003. Stand alone versions are also available.
