Just back from six months aboard "Lazy Days" with the dog. Some brief notes:
(1) traveled mostly around Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod and Nantucket. Highlight
was definitely at Stage Harbod (near Chatham, Cape Cod)...Whalered south to
Monomoy Island with daughter and freinds to see seal colony...big grays and little
harbor seals..spectacular. At the Western end of Nantucket, traveled the
shoals with Lazy Days but bumped sand bar trying to get into the "harbor" at
Tuckernuck Island just west of Nantucket....charted depths of 16/17 feet have
shoaled to under three feet across the harbor so I couldn't get in to protected
harbor. We anchored overnight anyway in dense fog which persisted the next day so
were unable to get to a reported seal colony just offshore via whaler.
(2) I carried three outboards this year....all three experienced trouble
during this trip after four prior years of no trouble at all!! One siezed up but
two weeks later before dumping it overboard, lo and behold it turned over when
the starter rope was pulled...replaced the water pump (I had a spare aboard)
and it works fine...The other two were repaired at Grey Lady Marina in
Nantucket...one had water in the lower unit, the other no spark....all three working
before we left.
(3) Eel grass drifting in Nantucket Harbor fouled three of my intakes and
those of many other boats anchored. We spent almost six weeks anchored because
the Nantucket Marine is about $3.50 per ft nightly plus about $40 for 50 amp
service.
(4) Weather was typically comfortable temps in the 70's and 80's, but humid.
I had mold over most of the interior of the boat and had to wipe down the wood
work and wash everything. I later read that residents of Nantucket and
Martha's Vineyard had similar problems in their homes.
(5) Each morning and most evenings (to avoid the heat/humidity of mid day)
the dog and I walked the Nantucket Marina to check out the megayachts...Sure is
something to see three or more uniformed crew members wiping off the evening
moisture, and dozens of shoes on the piers as parties are underway. Two sail
boats had red (aircraft??) warning lights blinking atop their huge masts...never
noticed that before...what height requires such lights??? We bought fresh
baked french bread and some of the best corn on the cob, grown locally, I can
remember.
Nantucket sure has an abundance of beautiful people.
Cheers,
Rob Brueckner
