There have been questions about controlling a horn to send the proper signals
for limited visibility. On North Star I installed a controller for the
electric horns after I concluded that the fog horn signal made by the ICOM 127 with
an amp was not loud enough. The controller I put in was extremely easy to
install and cost less than $100. Its limitation was that it only made the
signal for a power vessel underway. Moose marinel, the company that made the
controller doesn't seem to be in business any more but I found the following web
site for another company: www.fogmate.com
Having had a controller and operating in fog often enough, I would not have a
boat without either an air horn with controller or a controller on the
electric horns. They work extremely well. Between an autopilot and a horn
controller, you are freed up significantly to concentrate on keeping a proper watch.
