Frank,
What you are looking for in battery water is pure H2O, with no dissolved mineral
content. Distilled water is the only thing that meets this requirement. Store bought
bottled drinking water or RO water from a water maker both contain some degree of
mineral content that makes them far less desirable then pure distilled water.
With that said, there are of course gray areas that sometimes need to be dealt with. If
the water level in the batteries is down below the level of the plates, you are
subjecting your batteries to damage and need to get the water level back up. If I didn't
have distilled water available in that situation, I would consider it less of a risk to
add some drinking water. I consider the little damage a small bit of mineralized water
would do to be the lesser of the evils compared to running the batteries with the plates
exposed.
Be aware that surface drinking water (i.e., water sourced from lakes and streams)
normally has a far lower mineral content than well water, and therefore is normally
better for the batteries than well water is. Of course, nothing is better than real
distilled water. I keep a jug of distilled water on the boat just for the batteries -
just so I don't have to ever have to use drinking water in them.

Kevin
